Wastage rate is one of the major issues in higher education. The present mticle deals with the link between the wastage rate index and the assessment of higher education system efficiency as well as the concept a.nd definition of the tenn "wastage" in higher education. Moreover, some related case studies canied out in Iran and other countries in the world have been cited in this article. Different wastage rates in the 1988 day-time attending courses of universities and other higher education institutes affilited to the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education at undergraduate level have also been offered in the article according to the students' sex, major, and admission shares in three different scenarios i.e. A, B and C. At the end, the m1icle provides the readers with some applied recommendations based on the results achieved throughout the research.
