In recent years, the subject of university leadership and specially the role of the presedent has been one of the most discussed issues in academic and university centers. Despite of noticeable over all developments in all sectors of the society, efficiency and efficacy of management in the in the universities has not improved accordingly. This study reviews the challenges and deff1ciencies facing management in Iranian public university president. Self-rated questionnires were sent to university presidents, their vice-presidents, and faculty deans of all public universities: 356 questionnires were completed by 38 university presidents and 288 vice-presidents, by faculty deans. The responses was content analysed and descriptive statistics were used to report the fit1dings. Result showed that the university structure and management system impose certain structural, personal, and behavioural burdens upon the presedents and vice versa. These problem are addressed, and same suggestions are proposed.
