After refering briefly to the crucial role of higher education system in national and domestic development, this article intends to depict and discuss the major indicators of higher education system in governmental sector in Iran. These indicators in form of quantitative devices not only· give a comprehensive picture of present status of higher education in Iran including number of students in universities, distribution of students according to their level and major of study, but also illustrate current status of faculty members as well as research activities in colledges and universities in Iran. Then the current status of higher education system in Iran in a comparative manner with some countries was discussed and evaluated. Finally, based on existing data, article has tended to describe major problems and obstacles to higher education in Iran along with their remedy.
