This article aims to elaborate on the indicators in higher education in the hope that it will assist readers in understanding the issues addressed in the process of planning concerning the appropriate indicators in higher education. It sets the problem of indicator in a broader context, explains in some details the nature and characteristics of indicators in higher education. In addition, it outlines the function of indicators in social affairs in general, and in higher education in particular. The author then acquaints readers with the notion of input, process and output indicators in higher education. This is followed with an elaboration of the construct, product, student population, f acuity welfare, financial and physical indicators in higher education. The article sums up with some recommendations for improvement of the quality of higher education in Iran.
