Abstract

The World Conference on Higher Education (Paris, 5-9 october 1998) was an attempt to discuss the problems, challenges and paradoxical changes of higher education through a "decisive" period, at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The conference was focused on four pivotal inssues, namely, relevance, quality, management and funding, and co.operation. It layed the ground for discussion to evolve around the following main themes and issues: 

 1. The requirements of the world of work
2.    Higher education and sustainable development
3.    Contributing to national and regional development
4.    Higher education staff development
5.    H.E. for a new society
6.    From traditional to virtual: new information technologies
7.    The major role of research
8.    The contribution of H.E. to the educational system as a whole

10.    Promoting the culture of peace
11.    Mobilizing the power of culture
12.    Social responsibility and academic freedom
