Introduction to Assessing Quality in Higher Education in Iran

Abstract

Globalization, socio-economic and technological changes affect systems of higher education. To meet these challenges, the systems should break with the traditional practices and set relevant goals and make appropriate policies. It is believed that the university's ultimate goal in present era is proparing people to function properly in society. To achieve this goal, the university should promote. three major concerns of relevancy, quality and equity. This paper reviews definitions of quality in higher education and outlines approaches to judge quality in the systems of higher education. While reviewing experiences of assessing quality in higher education system in Iran, self-evaluation as a tool which is applied on experimental basis for assessing the quality of medical education in Iran is, presented.
